Gauri started her dance training in kathak while growing up in India. After pursuing it to a professional level, her interest in modern dance led to getting her MA in Theatre and Dance from the University of New Mexico, USA. She was the recipient of Fine Art's Finest and the Brian Hansen Fellowship while studying there. She is also a graduate of The School of Toronto Dance Theatre. She holds a PhD in Dance Studies from York University.
Performance
As a dancer and choreographer, Gauri has presented kathak and contemporary works in India, U.S.A. and the U.K. She has worked with Sarah Chase, Elizabeth Chitty, Vidhyanidhee Vanarase and Susie Burpee in works presented at the Kalanidhi Festival, Shared Habitat Festival, Nuit Blanche (all Toronto) and London International Theatre Festival, U.K.
In 2007, Gauri presented an evening length show of her own works, titled Between Compromise and Balance, in Pune, India.
Gauri has presented several works in Toronto at venues such as Series 8:08, Eros, Thanatos and the avant-garde, Coexisdance and Masala, mehndi, masti. She was commissioned twice to choreograph and dance for Majlis Multidisciplinary Arts.
Gauri presented an evening length contemporary dance production titled The Storyteller and (The Sparrow and The Crow) at York University as a part of her dissertation. She danced both solos, The Storyteller, choreographed by herself and The Sparrow and the Crow, choreographed by Michelle Silagy.
Teaching
Gauri has taught contemporary dance, kathak and yoga independently, at Majlis Multidisciplinary Arts and at York University. She was a guest faculty member at The Film and Television Institute of India, Pune and The School of Performing Arts, FLAME, Pune.
Conference presentations
Gauri has presented papers at the conference of Canadian Society for Dance Studies, Graduate Conference in Translation Studies, and the annual international conference of the Indian Society for Theatre Research.
